Female dominance and feeding priority, Anthropology, University of Texas-AustinField StudyFemale dominance and feeding priority, Anthropology, University of Texas-Austin Project Director: Deborah J. Overdorff and Dr. Elizabeth Erhart Contact Person: Deborah Overdorff , overdorff@mail.utexas.edu , Phone: 512-471-7532 Fax: 512-471-6535 E-mail: overdorff@mail.utexas.edu Mailing address: EPS 1.108 , Austin , Texas C3200 Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar Research Objectives: The objectives in brief are to tease identify the ecological and reproductive mechanisms which may influence the evolution of female dominance and feeding priority in four species of lemurid primates, ruffed lemurs, sifakas, red-fronted lemurs, and red-bellied lemurs. In addition, we aim to determine whether or not feeding priority can exist in the absence of female dominance, what behaviors might constitute priority of access, and how these patterns of behavior relate to both male and female fitness. This project takes place at the Vatoharanana field station 5km south of the main RNP research statio) We are also looking at long term life-history and demographic trends. Field Positions and Volunteers: Will take volunteers (undergraduate and graduate or those intending to attend graduate school) Currrently there is no field school but I do have from time to time money for assistants (will be willing to consider individuals who are able to pay their own way). Species Studied: Propithecus diadema edwardsi (diademed sifaka) Red-bellied lemur (Eulemur rubriventer) Red-fronted or rufous lemur (Eulemur fulvus rufus) possibly ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata). Other Species Found At Site: Hapalemur griseus; Hapalemur aureus (in other areas of the park but not at Vatoharanana); Hapalemur simus (in other areas of park but not Vatoharanana); Avahi laniger; Lepilemur; Microcebus; Daubentonia; Cheirogaleous Affiliations: Wenner-Gren, University of Texas-Austin, National Science Foundation(past support and pending) Project Begin/End Dates: 1996-present Web Site: http://www.utexas.edu/cola/depts/anthropology/physical/ Entry created: never [Update Entry] [Delete Entry] |
