New PrimateLit Feature!

We're excited to announce a great new feature in PrimateLit. PrimateLit now attempts to identify each user's institutional affiliation and automatically provide links to that institution's online journals and other content from within search results. If PrimateLit can't automatically identify the proper institution, the user is prompted to manually set the preference through a simple form. Note that access to licensed content is dependent on the user having proper permission (through the institution) to access that content.

Check out the new feature at http://primatelit.library.wisc.edu. Feedback and/or questions are always welcome at library@primate.wisc.edu.

2008 Jacobsen Conservation Research Award

The Lawrence Jacobsen WNPRC Conservation Research Award supports studies in applied conservation biology that protect nonhuman primate species in their habitat.

The award is available to students and/or faculty working in the field of primate conservation. Applicants must be affiliated with a university, college or non-governmental organization (NGO). Students and/or researchers from all countries are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to those working directly with a nonhuman primate species that IUCN lists as threatened or endangered.

Applications for the 2008 award are due June 1, 2008 and the decision will be announced September 1.

See http://pin.primate.wisc.edu/jacobsen for more information, including an online application.

Hamel Named New Library Director

A 25-year veteran of the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center is the new head of its library. Raymond Hamel, known to many as one of the New York Times's premiere crossword puzzle constructors and a movie trivia buff, becomes the third director of the Lawrence Jacobsen Library, succeeding Cynthia Robinson and, before her, Larry Jacobsen, who began the library in the 1970s and retired in 2003.

As Director of Library and Information Services, Hamel will oversee library operations including hiring, budgeting, purchasing, space planning and goal setting. He will lead the design team for PIN, and serve as a member of the design team for PrimateLit, an international database for primate literature. He will work closely with senior library staff members Joanne Brown and Matthew Hoffman, as well as with the many students who are the core of daily library operations and customer service.

Hamel has been the media reviews editor for the American Journal of Primatology for the past five years. With Jacobsen and Brown, he co-authored Internet Resources in Primatology, ILAR Journal, 1987. He is also the author of The New York Times Trivia Quiz Book and co-author of Star Trek Crosswords, among several other puzzle books. Hamel worked as a host and writer for WTDY-AM Madison radio's weekly trivia show in the late '80s to early '90s.
